Here’s a link to my original post, ‘Healing My Brain Through Music’.
This week was a deep dive into solo viola music suggested to me by a fantastic violist friend of mine, Kallie Sugatski. I jotted down notes on the pieces as they came to me.
- Weariness heals wounds I – Olga Neuwirth / This took a couple of listens to fully get but I enjoyed the piece, especially her use of dissonance and what I think must have been upper harmonics. The descending runs around 6 minutes in were particularly interesting to check out.
- Wild Purple – Joan Tower / Absolutely thrilling! I love this piece! Paul Neubauer was the violist.
- Signs, Games & Messages for Viola – György Kurtág / Powerful piece. Interesting use of double and triple stops. Really showcases what the viola is capable of.
- Viola Concerto ‘A String Around Autumn’ – Toru Takemitsu / Lush and gorgeous arrangement for the orchestra. Reminded me of classic film scores from the 1960’s.
